ODE TO A LOSER
by
Aaron Lehmann
another sunrise seeps
through his same old soiled sheets
oh confronting the terror of defeat!
He tries to pass on all his sorrow
yet his taker’s dreams are full
with all these duties laid out before her
it’s hard to sift it through
his cleanliness, at a loss for words
only excuses have the means to speak
“let me walk and get my medicine”
stuff they say will eat his meat
all his regrets become a pattern
his pattern becomes a losing streak
not even she can let them be forgotten
“Then teach me where to go I say!”
a riverside, a sandy beach, an October forest wood?
where sunrise seeps through changing leaves
and love is worth the borrow
it is here he morns his wasted strength
wasted on so many sins
now only time is laid to rest
to churn what might have been
you see, his legs have gone to sleep
we wait the rest to follow
…when final rest will follow
oh to be swallowed by that tender place!
where significance cannot be bought
where his wilted hopes evaporate
into the children of tomorrow
